Abduction attempt prompts safety warning
Students and parents in Davie are being urged to take extra precautions after a man attempted to abduct a girl while she was walking to a bus stop Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred in the Falcons Cove section of Davie. The teenage girl had just left home and was walking along a sidewalk to meet her bus to Silver Lakes Middle School when a man in a car pulled up alongside her near Manchester Lane and Falcons Lea Drive and asked her if she wanted a ride. The girl did not go with the man.
LISTEN: Call to parents
"She was very calm, yeah, but she was very freaked out by this," said the teen's father, who did not want to be identified. "You see it on the news all the time, and it's just frightening to think about that stuff, you know?"
The teen's father said his daughter sent him a text message "straight away."
The principal at nearby Hawkes Bluff Elementary School wasted no time alerting her students with an automated phone message.
"We are asking for you to speak to your child and remind your child to report suspicious activity immediately to an adult so that law enforcement can be contacted and an investigation can be conducted."
The teenager in Wednesday's incident said the person who tried to lure her was a white, bald man who is 60 to 70 years old. He drove an older-model, four-door white Acura with bubble-tinted windows.
The Davie Police Department's Sex Crimes unit is investigating. At this point, it has not learned of any other incidents involving a man or a vehicle of these descriptions.
Anyone with information is asked to call Davie police or 911.
